Luton Borough Council is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Streetworks Inspector to join our team. You will play a vital role in ensuring the safety, compliance, and quality of streetworks throughout the borough. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience in highways and customer service to make a real difference in our community.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect and monitor streetworks to ensure compliance with statutory regulations and council policies.
- Conduct investigations, analyse data, and prepare detailed factual reports and correspondence.
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to support street permitting operations and resolve issues effectively.
- Ensure works comply with the New Roads and Street Works Act, Traffic Management Act 2004, and other relevant legislation.
- Build collaborative relationships with contractors, utility companies, and members of the public to promote safe and efficient working practices.
- Attend emergency site visits and meetings outside of normal working hours when required.
About You
Essential Experience
- Demonstrable site supervisory experience within a highway environment.
- Office experience in a customer/public service setting.
- Some experience within a Street Permitting section.
- Strong investigative skills – able to establish facts, analyse information, and produce clear reports.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel (or equivalent).
- Excellent organisational skills – able to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills with the ability to build positive relationships inside and outside the Council.
- Solid understanding of NRSWA, Traffic Management Act 2004, CDM Regulations, and Health & Safety legislation.
- Knowledge of NRSWA Code of Practice inspections is essential.
- BTEC in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification, or relevant experience and training.
- Hold or be able to obtain NRSWA accreditation within 2 months of starting.
- CICRS accreditation in Scaffolding Safety Inspection is desirable.
- Ability to travel efficiently across the Borough on a daily basis.
- Willingness to attend site meetings and emergencies outside of normal working hours.
- Awareness of equality issues and how discrimination can affect service delivery.
