Band 4 Paediatric Technical Instructor – Internal only

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and organised individual to work in our Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Team, based in Wrexham Child Health Centre, as a full time Band 4 Technical Instructor to work with children with communication difficulties. You will be part of a supportive team of Speech and Language Therapists and Technical Instructors who work in a variety of locations across Wrexham and Flintshire to provide services to children with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work in Early Years and School Aged services delivering individual and group therapy as well as providing training to parents and education staff. As a band 4 TI, you will have more autonomy in your work and will support and may offer clinical supervision to the band 3 TIs, as required. Previous experience of working with children with speech, language and communication needs is essential and you will be actively encouraged to continue to develop your skills and knowledge under the supervision of Speech and Language Therapists. You will have the knowledge to work with a more complex caseload and have developed skills within your own field of work which you are able to transfer to other clinical areas within broader client groups. Your current skills and knowledge will mean you are competent to modify therapeutic approaches and care plans, when appropriate. As a band 4 TI, you will have developed knowledge on a range of interventions and the associated evidence base. You will have an understanding of the basic rationale behind therapeutic approaches and be able to successfully implement these. You will also be required to participate in and contribute to service evaluation and development.

The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Essential criteria

  • Quality Credit Framework qualification at level 3 e.g. NVQ related to Health & Social Care
  • Proven experience of working in relevant clinical specialty at diploma equivalent level
  • Documented evidence of participation in relevant clinical training activities

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Relevant experience of working within a Therapy environment.
  • Sound understanding of the role of Speech & Language Therapy
  • Sound understanding of child speech/language development and/or the concept of rehabilitation/recovery as appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Basic knowledge of main conditions relevant to area of speciality and the effects of illness on function.
  • Proven ability to apply knowledge following training
  • Self-motivation for Continued Professional Development

Desirable criteria

  • Experience working in a related health/social care or education setting.
  • Working in a leadership role

Skills

Essential criteria

  • Ability to work independently with individuals and/or groups
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Computer skills e.g. use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and data inputting
  • Ability to travel across sites to work and to carry out clinical tasks
  • Awareness of team dynamics and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Physical & emotional stamina to deal with sensitive and difficult situations
  • Ability to undertake physical activity involved with therapy relevant to role, e.g. play-based therapy activities with children.
