Engineering Manager
Location: Hemel Hempstead
Salary: £64,000 per annum + Company Car

Role Purpose
As the Engineering Manager, you will lead the maintenance and performance of the fleet, ensuring all operations meet regulatory and safety standards while achieving key performance targets. You will play a central role in driving engineering excellence, team leadership, and strategic improvements across the depot.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Operations
- Lead day-to-day engineering functions, ensuring vehicle reliability, safety, and compliance.
- Deliver engineering performance and service targets in line with company KPIs.
Team Management
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team including engineers, apprentices, team leaders, storekeepers, and administrative staff.
- Manage staff scheduling, shift planning, and performance management.
Financial Management
- Oversee the engineering budget, forecasting, and garage-level financial performance.
- Support and deliver on business-critical projects, working to minimise lost mileage and operational costs.
Health & Safety
- Ensure depot operations meet all health, safety, and environmental requirements.
- Conduct regular audits and ensure full compliance with O-Licence and safety legislation.
- Manage and monitor third-party contractors on site.
Compliance & Training
- Ensure full audit and legal compliance across engineering records and processes.
- Support and deliver ongoing technical training and development within the team.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and improve workshop performance through lean principles and efficient processes.
Customer Focus
- Ensure vehicle availability consistently meets operational and customer needs.
- Monitor breakdown trends and implement effective corrective measures.
Reporting
- Produce timely and accurate daily, weekly, and period-end reports on key engineering metrics.
Recruitment & Development
- Lead recruitment and ongoing development of engineering staff.
- Ensure a culture of high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong engineering background, ideally within the bus or HGV sector.
- Proven leadership experience managing technical teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Sound knowledge of safety, compliance, and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience in managing budgets, forecasting, and engineering operations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Understanding of workshop operations, payroll systems, and shift planning.
