We have a strong focus on quality improvement with active participation in the whole hospital Improving Together programme. The department consists of 5 wards, 22 other consultants, 5 SpRs, numerous trainees and 14 medical nurse practitioners and advance care practitioners. Consultants have research interests and teach undergraduates from Bristol Medical School. We actively encourage involvement in development of services or other aspects of geriatric medicine. There is a separate Geriatric Medical take and the post holders will take a share in that on weekdays; , consultants also work 1 in 6 weekends (one full day, one half day, no on call duties) with 2 Consultants in working either at the front door or reviewing ward patients with nurse practitioners.

Candidates must possess or be within 6 months of possessing CCT in Geriatric Medicine.

Main duties of the job

This post is particularly designed to support movement disorders in an outpatient setting, as well as having roles within our inpatient work and out of hours cover. The inpatient work is now arranged in blocks of 5 DCC running Monday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Friday, improving continuity and cross cover.

You will work jointly with colleagues to ensure all senior decision making for the patients is conducted on a daily basis. Opportunities exist to review job plans in order to maximise continuity, patient flow and job satisfaction.

You will support resident doctors on the wards, as well as skilled medical nurse practitioners (all are either prescribers or working towards this) who provide extra skills and continuity. We manage our junior medical staff across the OPU to ensure staffing is maintained sustainably, with training at the forefront.

Some of our posts provide sessions as part of the ‘Frailty Flying Squad’, as described above, provided as a 5-8pm session each weekday evening (frequency 1 in 10 pro-rata)

There is a daily ward round of new frailty admissions on the PTWR and throughout the day. This post does not have on call out of hours commitments.

Weekends are worked on a 1 in 8 (pro rata) basis with 2 consultants carrying out short or long day cover each day.

During working hours, all Consultants support a telephone Advice and Guidance service, run via ‘Cinapsis’, with capacity for delivering and recording information.
