Summary: Currently located within the Lakeside facility in Portsmouth, the Master Records Data Centre (MRDC) Team are responsible for managing and maintaining the Surface Ship Definition Database (SSDD). The SSDD contains millions of records relating to RN and RFA Ships.The service ensures the capture of all necessary data and that SSDD is kept relevant and easily accessible.

There can be significant impact on-board if SSDD data is not kept current as its information is required to coordinate all maintenance, repairs and upgrades to the Fleet effectively. It is therefore vital that the MRDC is provided with timely and accurate source material, e.g A&A Installation Solutions, End of Support Period Reports, Drawings and Parts lists to maintain up to date information on changes to Ships Fit.


Job Description:

The MRDC Configuration Engineers undertake configuration accounting tasks which involve the extraction of configuration data from approved source documentation to ensure the SSDD is maintained with the right data at the right time. This involves interpreting technical data from drawings, specifications and other technical publications, comparing to data held in the SSDD and updating the SSDD as required.


The MRDC Configuration Engineers are responsible for the accuracy of their own work, whilst working under the direction of the Senior Configuration Engineers and Configuration Team Leaders. This includes liaising with stakeholders to resolve data conflicts whilst ensuring tasks are completed within the contracted timescales.


The CE principal tasks and responsibilities are:

  • To carry out screening (extract of relevant data) across a range of source material, including drawings, parts lists, specifications, design solutions, and enter/update the data as required to maintain the Ship Fit Definitions on SSDD.
  • Ensure all tasks both core and new tasks undertaken are conducted in accordance with the project procedures and quality plan, and look to identify efficiency improvements, issues and resolutions.
  • Provide assistance and carry out when necessary (within level of competence) activities undertaken by other Configuration Engineers.
  • Undertake Ship visits to support configuration audits as required.
  • Ensure when updating SSDD that cognisance is taken of potential impact on all SSDD data interfaces identified in Outputs and interfaces schedule.
  • Prepare process documentation and stakeholder engagement reports where required within your area of responsibility.
  • Attend internal meetings when required to discuss and report on configuration issues.
  • Support updating procedures and reports onto SharePoint.
  • Ensure compliance with the company SHE management system, demonstrating safe behaviors and integrating SHE into all aspects of your work as a routine.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competence:

  • Engineering experience is essential with a good knowledge of how maintenance updates, system upgrades and design changes are managed within the MoD Maritime environment.
  • Able to interpret technical data from drawings and other documentation.
  • Strong communicator both with internal and external stakeholders.
  • IT literate, with experience of using engineering support software and configuration tools (SSDD) being desirable.
  • Technical knowledge and ability to present data issues internally.
  • Strong team player who can interact well within their own team and with other teams and business areas.
  • Should hold or have the ability to obtain SC clearance.
  • Should own ONC or equivalent academic qualification.
