Forming an integral part of the Corporate team, the Associate role will advise a range of clients throughout all stages of business life cycle. The Corporate team advises on a broad range of high-profile UK and cross border mergers, acquisitions and disposals (both public and private) as well as IPO’s and offerings of securities on the Official List, and AIM and private placements, acting for issuers, financial advisers and brokers.
The team in Cheltenham consists of two Partners, one Legal Director, one Senior Associate, two Associates, and one Trainee supported by the Internal Client Services team.
The recruit will be based in our Cheltenham office and will work closely with Adrian Mayer and Jonathan Morley. Adrian advises on private equity and investment work in addition to some public securities mandates. Jonathan’s practice is primarily corporate finance with particular experience in mergers and acquisitions (public and private), private equity and joint ventures. The workload and the practices of each are varied and interesting with much of the work having an international element.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities (this is a broad but not exhaustive list)
• Manage a substantial and varied workload efficiently and cost-effectively with supervision, appropriate to the level of expertise
• Work with, and assist in the development of more junior members of the team
• Draft documents with minimum instruction and supervision, making use of appropriate precedents
• Apply a commercial approach to research and evaluate relevance and accuracy in delivery of advice
• Identify client opportunities and take appropriate steps to follow through
• Contribute to group knowledge and know-how initiatives
Person Specification
• Be an England and Wales qualified lawyer (or equivalent) with 2-4 PQE with a strong ambition to progress to Senior Associate
• Demonstrate good judgement and a good legal and commercial understanding of client’s particular needs
• Demonstration of proactivity
• Understand scope of the tasks, manage time effectively and perform well under time and work pressures
• Strong project management skills
• Ability to work with others (including more senior people) internally and externally
• Take a ‘hands on’ approach to managing own files and a broad case load
• Have a high degree of attention to detail
• Have strong problem-solving skills
• Be flexible and willing to undertake a wide variety of tasks
• Be a pro-active team player, who is also highly self-motivated and able to work on their own initiative
• Be confident in both verbal and written communication with a diverse range of clients
• Be able to build rapport with clients and develop an effective working relationship
• Be flexible and willing to go the extra mile
• Comply with all relevant legal and regulatory obligations including the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Standards and Regulations, and Principles.
