Job Description – Young People & Family Ceramis Tutor


Midlands Arts Centre’s Learning and Participation programme is extensive with over 150 term courses and a wide selection of short courses for children, young people, and adults. Our courses cover many subjects, from visual arts and crafts to digital arts, performance, music, and wellbeing. We are situated in the leafy Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham. We are recruiting for an artist tutor to teach our 12-week ceramics courses - Saturday Pottery Club and Family Pottery courses.


Principle Purpose of Post


To deliver the tuition of two 12-week Ceramics courses for Young People and Families, as part of MAC’s Learning & Participation programme, starting in Autumn 2026.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about the arts and informal learning experiences and enjoys teaching Ceramics courses and workshops.

You are required to be reliable, personable, and flexible, to cater for each student’s personal goals and aims.

Midlands Arts Centre’s Learning and Participation programme is extensive with over 160 term courses and a wide selection of short courses for children, young people, and adults. Our courses cover many subjects, from visual arts and crafts to digital arts, performance, music, and wellbeing.

The successful candidate will be part of a large team of Artist Tutors who help us deliver a vibrant and dynamic programme of informal learning.


Overall Job Purpose

We are looking for someone to deliver the following Saturday Ceramics courses:


Pottery Club (CH06 Autumn)

  • 10:00-12:00
  • 6-11yrs
  • All levels


Family Pottery (FA02 Spring)

  • 13:30-16:00
  • 6-12yrs + Parent and Guardians
  • All levels


To deliver tuition as part of MAC’s Learning & Participation programme, with additional responsibilities as follows


  • Devising clear lesson plans and course structure to enable progression of learning, and the ability to adapt to each participant needs.
  • Ensuring the course is delivered as per the course description. Teaching all levels of Ceramics techniques.
  • Continuous reflection and evaluation on the course, and quality of delivery.
  • Work within MAC’s policies with specific attention to Safeguarding and Health & Safety.

Additional responsibilities as follows:


  • You will need to devise a clear course structure to enable progression of learning, and the ability to adapt to each participant’s needs.
  • Teaching students to the agreed level for the course (eg, beginner/ improver/advanced).
  • Preparation ahead of the course for equipment and technical requests by liaising with the Learning Team.
  • Continuous reflection and evaluation on the course, and quality of delivery.
  • Work within MAC’s policies with specific attention to Safeguarding and Health & Safety.


Note


  • These courses will run on Saturday mornings throughout the academic year at the times listed.
  • The Autumn Term 2025 starts w/c Monday 14 September 2026.
  • The Spring Term 2026 starts w/c Monday 4 January 2027.
  • The Summer Term starts w/c Monday 12 April 2027.
  • We expect the successful candidate to attend an induction session at MAC before they start.


Person Specification


Essential


  • Previous experience in delivering practical Ceramics courses and workshops.
  • Educated/experienced to a suitable level in Ceramics.
  • Proven ability to communicate well with a range of people using varied communication methods.
  • A valid DBS or the ability to pass a DBS check.
  • A passion and commitment to the Arts.
  • A commitment to further your skills and knowledge in participatory arts, including attending meetings, participating in training, and reflecting on your practice.
  • An understanding of and commitment to MAC’s key objectives.
  • An understanding of the practical application of MAC’s Equal Opportunities and Diversity policy.


Desirable


  • Experience of working with adults and children with additional needs and/or vulnerable adults.
  • Knowledge of other creative art forms which may help us expand our creative learning offer at MAC.
