Trainee Overhead Line (OHL) Technician

Location: UK Wide
Business Unit: Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution

Balfour Beatty is a leader in delivering critical infrastructure across the UK. As part of our continued growth within the Power Transmission & Distribution business, we are looking for Trainee Overhead Line (OHL) Technicians to join our teams nationwide.

This is a fantastic opportunity to start your career in the power industry, working alongside experienced OHL Technicians and gaining hands-on experience on major infrastructure projects supporting the UK’s energy transition.


What you'll be doing
  • Actively seek to learn and develop new skills to support career development to
    Overhead Linesman
  • To take responsibility for health and safety and promoting health and safety
    across the business
  • To carry out all work in accordance with BB OHL work instructions, method
    statements and policies and procedures
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of others who
    may be affected by your actions or omissions whilst at work.
  • Cooperate with BB in all matters pertaining to Health and Safety to enable the
    Company to carry out and enhance its legal duties and requirements.
  • Do not recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of
    health, safety and welfare
  • Bring to the attention of your manager any perceived shortcomings in health
    and safety arrangements or situations that you consider to be serious or
    imminent danger to yourself or others.
  • Do not undertake any safety critical work activity or activity for which a specific
    competence is required unless you have received the necessary
    training/instruction and/or assessment and hold the appropriate Certificate of
    Competence/Authority to Work. Do not instruct others to undertake such work
    if they do not hold the appropriate Certificate of Competence/Authority to
    Work.

  • Rope and knots
  • Fittings assembly
  • Pull-lifts
  • Tirfors
  • Blocks and Wiring Equipment
  • Bonds and slings
  • Clamps
  • Toggles
  • Hand tools
  • Protection systems – fall arrest
  • Permanent attachment
  • Demarcation
  • Climbing
  • Spacer trolley
  • Lifting and lowering
  • Stockings and J Stops
  • Platforms

Who we're looking for


The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Full clean driving licence
  • GCSE A-C in Maths and English (Apprenticeship only)
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to undertake work in high pressure situations
  • Flexibility – Willing to travel and work across the UK
  • Aptitude for working at heights
  • Responsibility – a strong attitude towards health and safety

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • Experience of working on a variety of construction project types.
  • Knowledge of the Power industry (is an advantage)
  • Valid Plant Tickets (will be an advantage)
  • OHL Authorisations (will be an advantage)
  • Emergency First Aid at Work
