Job Description:

Hitachi Rail is seeking a dedicated and skilled Technical Riding Inspector with a passion for railways and technology. In this critical role, you will help ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of Hitachi’s rolling stock assets while operating in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. This position is based in Bristol .

Salary: £62,325
15% Shift Allowance
£3,000 Location Allowance

Accountabilities

In this exciting position, you will be responsible for delivering rapid fault finding and diagnostic solutions to any issues impacting service performance, operational capability, or safety of the train sets. You will ensure faults are corrected or isolated efficiently, enabling trains to return to service where practicable. This is a permanent role working on a rotating shift pattern.

Specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking fault finding, diagnostics, and repairs on Hitachi rolling stock both in passenger service and at outstations/depots as required
  • Supporting the Maintenance Control team and collaborating with customers to establish operational desks within the Rail Maintenance Control Centre
  • Advising customer operational staff to minimise service delays and improve overall performance
  • Travelling across the network, as directed by the Hitachi Control Room, to meet trains in service
  • Utilising a 4G tablet, diagnostic laptop, and hand tools to complete and accurately record all maintenance work
  • Liaising with Network Rail staff and other key stakeholders as required
  • Ensuring traction and rolling stock assets meet operational specifications using established engineering processes
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records within the SAP system
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications for rolling stock and traction systems
  • Preparing for and carrying out removal and replacement of components
  • Modifying or manufacturing components using appropriate hand tools and engineering techniques
  • Installing new components in accordance with engineering standards
  • Identifying, assessing, and rectifying defects and discrepancies on rolling stock assets
  • Recognising repeat faults and contributing to sustainable repair solutions
  • Developing technical scopes of work for fault resolution by other team members
  • Providing technical support during in-service failures when on duty
  • Adhering to all health, safety, environmental, and quality standards
  • Supporting continuous professional development and fostering strong working relationships
  • Learning new skills in line with evolving business requirements
  • Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to fulfil role requirements

About you:

Required Skills/ Knowledge
  • Proven experience in stock-specific maintenance and fault diagnosis
  • Full UK Driving Licence

Behavioural

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team while making decisions under pressure
  • Strong understanding of and adherence to industry rules and regulations
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional approach when representing Hitachi Rail at all times

Education/Qualifications

  • HNC in Mechanical & Electrical Engineering or completion of a relevant engineering apprenticeship
  • NVQ Level 3 in an engineering discipline

Desired Skills (not essential)

  • Intermediate IT skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel)
  • Previous experience in train inspection, maintenance, or a similar technical role
