About the role

Balfour Beatty is recruiting a highly skilled and motivated Sub-Agent to support the delivery of engineering surveys as part of the Lower Thames Crossing Project. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to one of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK, focusing on topographical surveys, ground investigations, utility trial trenches, and weathering steel.

What you'll be doing

Key Responsibilities:

As a Sub-Agent, you will be responsible for the delivery of various scopes of work, supporting the Package Manager across multiple tasks including:

  • Health, Safety & Wellbeing: Ensure a safe working environment by enforcing health and safety standards and promoting a culture of wellbeing. Support the creation of Works Package Plans and review sub-contractor documentation.
  • Programme Management: Assist the Package Manager in planning and coordinating both self-delivered and third-party works. Ensure projects are delivered on time, with progress being continuously monitored and any issues proactively addressed.
  • Project Management: Work with subcontractors, suppliers, and stakeholders to ensure smooth workflow and on-time delivery. Proactively resolve challenges as they arise during construction.
  • Quality Assurance: Support quality management by setting and maintaining required quality standards. Oversee the production of Inspection & Test Plans, material approvals, and ensure team understanding of specifications.
  • Community Engagement: Deputise for the Package Manager when necessary to ensure clear communication with stakeholders and the public. Collaborate with the Social Value Team to meet community commitments.
  • Environmental Sustainability & Carbon: Ensure compliance with the Environmental Management Plan and carbon reduction targets for the scheme.
  • Reporting & Cost Management: Provide regular updates to the Package Manager on project progress and any deviations from the plan. Assist with maintaining strict budgetary control and cost management processes.
  • Procurement & Design Management: Support the procurement process, including preparing technical scopes for tenders and requisitions for plant and materials. Work with design teams and subcontractors to manage changes and design elements.
  • Handover: Ensure that all required handover documentation (e.g., construction certificates, as-built plans, O&M manuals) is completed in line with project requirements.
  • Leadership: Provide leadership and mentorship to Section/Site Engineers and Apprentices, ensuring the success of the team under your guidance.


Who we're looking for

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Proven experience in a similar role, ideally on large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction regulations, NEC3/NEC4 contracts, and best practices.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.




Qualifications and Prerequisites:

  • Engineering or Construction Management qualification.
  • Full UK driver’s license.
  • Fit for work medical.
  • CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
  • Pre-start drug and alcohol test.
  • BPSS Security Clearance (candidate will need to provide a basic Disclosure and Barring Service check).
