Job Overview
The Acute Stroke Unit is currently recruiting to the post of Medical Nurse Practitioner. The Medical Nurse Practitioner will be expected to play a key role in the identification of suitable Stroke patients in the Emergency Department that will benefit from the care of the specialist Stroke teams on ASU. This is in line with the expansion of stroke services in order to administer acute stroke treatments in a timely way so as to reduce disability. Also the trust ambition remains “Right Patient, Right Bed, Every Time”.
The post holder will also actively drive safe, timely and effective discharge to include the appropriate identification of patients for early morning discharge.
You will also be supported through your non-medical prescribing course if you do not possess this already or the Advanced Clinical Practitioner masters. There is a very active development programme both within the Stroke Service and the Medical Nurse Practitioner group as a whole.
The Medical Nurse Practitioner role within the Acute Stroke Service covers 7 day working, therefore the successful candidate will be required to work weekends, both early and late shifts or long days.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to undertake extended roles in line with patient needs and will where appropriate, provide initial assessment to patients and working at an advanced level performing clinical procedures and tasks that have been previously undertaken by medical and/or technical staff.
The post holder will practice autonomously and also within a defined team / multi-disciplinary team and in accordance with local guidelines and protocols to ensure patient safety needs are paramount. The post holder will formulate clinical decisions and treatment plans within local guidelines / protocols to manage acute and chronic illness and respond to actual and potential health problems appropriately. The post holder will provide a consistency within the ward areas with a focus on safe, timely and effective discharge. The post holder will be grounded in nursing and will undertake advanced clinical practice procedures or tasks. The post holder will also provide holistic nursing care or therapeutic nursing interventions to ensure patient safety is maintained. The post holder must be able to clearly demonstrate well-developed specialist knowledge and skills at an advanced level (Degree/Masters or equivalent) in a specialist area of practice or with a defined patient group through recognised accredited training programmes. The post holder will, where appropriate, provide clinical support to relevant outreach and inpatient areas.
