Grade UE06 - £32,982 - £38,205 per annum

College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine - MRC - Human Genetics Unit

Full time - 35 hours per week

Fixed term contract - 2 years

A research technician is sought for an initial 24-months post in the laboratory of Professor Yanick Crow, to support work investigating human diseases associated with enhanced interferon-mediated signalling.

The candidate will be detail-oriented, motivated to learn and master new techniques, and effective in managing her/his own time and workload in order to meet project deadlines.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to join a team of scientists recognised internationally for work on Mendelian disorders associated with an upregulation of type I interferon signalling; proceeding from clinical definition, through gene identification, to functional characterisation of underlying pathology (see Nat Rev Immunol 2022;22:471-83 for an overview). We will encourage the development of your research portfolio through involvement in all aspects of the life of the laboratory.

Your Skills And Attributes For Success

  • BSc in Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology or a closely related subject
  • Laboratory experience, particularly in cell culture, cloning and site-directed mutagenesis
  • Specific skills relating to all or several of the following techniques: iPSC technology, DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, sequencing, RT-PCR, qPCR, western blotting
  • Ability to apply relevant knowledge, skills and techniques in research
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Excellent knowledge of scientific English for speaking, reading, and writing

The MRC Human Genetics Unit is part of the Institute of Genetics and Cancer (IGC). This partnership with CRUK Edinburgh Centre and Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine Centre aims to understand development and disease by using the latest developments in genetic, genomic, cellular and clinical science. The partnership provides access to state of the art scientific facilities, scientific infrastructure and business support, including on site Advanced Imaging Resource, Animal Model support, Bioinformatics Analysis Core, DNA sequencing, Flow Cytometry, Mass Spectrometry, HTPU microarray.
