Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated nurse with a passion for palliative and end-of-life care to join our hospital-based Palliative Care Team. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a well-established and dynamic multi-disciplinary team dedicated to providing specialist advice and support to patients, their families, and healthcare professionals.

About You

  • Have significant experience at a senior level in palliative and end-of-life care.
  • Hold a degree and a palliative care qualification.
  • Possess excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Are committed to continuing professional development and education.
  • Are working towards or willing to complete physical assessment and independent prescribing within the first 1–2 years.

Main duties of the job

As a Macmillan Palliative Care CNS, You Will

  • Provide expert clinical support to patients with both malignant and non-malignant disease.
  • Manage a caseload of patients with specialist palliative care needs.
  • Contribute to education, research, and the implementation of national guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to enhance patient care.
  • Support a 7-day specialist palliative care visiting service within the hospital.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Act as a clinical expert in palliative care, providing specialist advice, guidance, and supervision to clinical staff, patients, and carers.
  • Promote best practice in palliative and end-of-life care through expert consultation and case management.
  • Support the development of individualised care plans, ensuring they align with patient preferences and national palliative care standards.
  • Work autonomously, managing a caseload of patients with complex palliative care needs while adopting the key worker role, as agreed with the Palliative Care Team Leader.

Essential criteria

  • Registered General nurse with degree in nursing studies
  • MSc in speciality or evidence of working towards
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Mentor prep
  • Advanced assessment skills

Desirable criteria

  • Oncology/Palliative Care Qualification
  • Communication skills training
  • Knowledge of palliative care in the acute sector
  • Independent nurse prescribing
