An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Upper Limb Surgery to join a well-established Trauma & Orthopaedic department in the East of England. This is a fixed-term Consultant position for 6 months, offering the opportunity to work within a collaborative and forward-thinking Orthopaedic service that delivers both elective upper-limb and trauma care.

The successful candidate will be fellowship-trained in Upper Limb Surgery and will join an established team of Consultants providing high-quality Orthopaedic services across the region. The role offers excellent clinical exposure, multidisciplinary collaboration, and opportunities in teaching, governance, and service development.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon will:

  • Provide Consultant-led care for Upper Limb Orthopaedic patients
  • Manage elective shoulder, elbow, wrist, and upper limb pathology
  • Perform elective upper limb surgical procedures independently
  • Deliver upper limb trauma care and participate in the trauma on-call rota
  • Lead outpatient clinics for new and follow-up upper limb patients
  • Undertake regular operating theatre sessions
  • Participate in ward rounds, inpatient reviews, and multidisciplinary discussions
  • Support efficient theatre utilisation and service performance targets
  • Supervise junior medical staff and trainees
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities
  • Contribute to teaching and educational programmes within the department Department & Service Overview

The Trauma & Orthopaedic Department Is a Cohesive And Progressive Service Providing Comprehensive Orthopaedic Care To a Diverse Regional Population. The Department Includes Specialists Across Major Orthopaedic Subspecialties, Including

  • Upper Limb Surgery
  • Lower Limb Arthroplasty
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Paediatric Orthopaedics

The successful appointee will join a supportive multidisciplinary environment with strong physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and specialist nursing support. The department benefits from dedicated Orthopaedic theatres and additional operating capacity depending on service demand.

The successful candidate will work closely with Consultant colleagues delivering safe and effective trauma and elective Orthopaedic care.

Person Specification Requirements Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Trauma & Orthopaedics via CCT or CESR
  • Fellowship training or extensive experience in Upper Limb Surgery
  • Ability to independently perform elective upper limb procedures
  • Strong experience managing shoulder, elbow, and upper limb pathology
  • Excellent multidisciplinary team working skills
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities
  • Commitment to clinical governance, patient safety, and service improvement Desirable
  • Higher qualification in medical education, clinical research, or management
  • Experience in teaching and educational supervision
  • Involvement in audit and quality improvement initiatives
  • Leadership or management experience
  • Research and innovation involvement
