We’re looking for a skilled Mechanical Technician to join our engineering team in Newport. This is a hands-on role supporting the smooth operation of the port’s critical infrastructure.

You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Mechanical maintenance, fault finding, and breakdown response across the Newport site
  • Working on heavy plant & equipment, cranes, lock gate infrastructure, and bridges
  • Ensuring all work is carried out safely and efficiently, with accurate reporting

Please note: You must be comfortable working at height and in confined spaces, including accessing cranes and lock bridge areas.

Skills, Experiences, Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering
  • Proven experience in heavy plant maintenance and repair
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics systems
  • Comfortable working at height and in confined spaces (e.g., cranes, lock bridges)
  • Hands-on approach with excellent fault-finding and diagnostic skills
  • Experience in heavy industry environments such as steelworks, quarries, or manufacturing
  • Ex-forces background welcomed
  • Strong commitment to health and safety practices
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small, close-knit team

Hours: The shift pattern consists of two alternating weekday shifts: 06:00–14:00 and 14:00–22:00, Monday to Friday. Additionally, there is a one-in-six weekend rota covering 06:00–18:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. Weekend hours are compensated as overtime.
