The Process & Pipeline Services business delivers In-line Inspection services to operators of oil & gas pipelines around the globe.

The Applications Engineering Team is responsible for the evaluation and specification of PII equipment design in relation to any intended contract and any modifications to either the PII equipment or the client’s equipment to enable operations to be undertaken. Applications engineering provide the first point contact for all technical queries dealing with PII products including cleaning, profile and inspection vehicles, on and off board systems and associated handling and test equipment.

As a Mechanical Application Engineer, you will be responsible for:


  • Working under the guidance of the Application Engineering Manager/Team Leader and when applicable, in close co-operation with the Project Leader and other Engineering staff in order to engineer solutions to solve mechanical, electronic and handling equipment problems to suit a particular operation.
  • Providing approved tool builds to Operations on time to enable timely mobilization and running of commercial jobs.
  • Developing solutions which work first time, meeting tight timescales and budget.
  • Undertaking technical and risks assessments of information and situations arising.
  • Producing layouts, designing schemes and drawings that fully define the problem and the proposed solution(s).
  • Completing any documentation to the appropriate standard.
  • Representing ILI (In-Line Inspection) with the client, fully understanding the scope of the problem, ensuring clear communications and an understanding of ILI’s requirements from the client.
  • Supporting the production/manufacture/assembly of the solutions designed, overcome any problems encountered but still consider standardization, value engineering, and maintainability.
  • Ensuring that all documentation produced for each project undertaken is of a level that can be clearly understood and providing sufficient detail to allow the operation to be repeated in the future.
  • Producing basic design calculations and plans, where necessary.
  • Carrying out failure investigation (FIT) on in-field failures and root cause analysis (RCA) to prevent re-occurrence of problems.
  • Resolving issues with and support new designs in-field

To be successful in this role you will:


  • Have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with proven experience in Customer Application Engineering.
  • Have experience in problem solving and the ability to apply this to solve electro-mechanical problems.
  • Show a willingness to acquire the technical knowledge of new products
  • Demonstrate exceptional verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Be a motivated self-starter with a result oriented mindset
  • Have knowledge of 2D and 3D Computer Aided Design packages
  • Be able to show good problem-solving and to work within the constraints of each project, balancing resources against timescales
  • Have In-line inspection experience in an operational or engineering role (preferred)
