Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer

Salary starting from £49,519 (depending on experience)

Location: Peterborough

About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. The Opportunity

As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will support the continuous improvement of the safety, quality, velocity and cost and delivering manufacturing process development projects. This will include providing technical support to both global and local manufacturing engineers with the development of manufacturing systems ranging from process governance, data analysis tools and automation improvements across all manufacturing Assembly, Test, Finish & Sub Assembly value streams (ATF & SA).

What You Will Do

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance in major manufacturing projects related to ATF & SA, working with internal/external suppliers to support/improve manufacturing productivity and cost effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design methods and process control using tools such as process flows, Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, and control plans.
  • Involvement in NPI or improvement projects (Technology/Efficiency/Quality) from initiation to completion, overseeing scope, budgets, resources, and execution.
  • Develop process improvements, ensure safe installation, and drive technology advancements while maintaining compliance with industry standards and customer requirements.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical and mechanical vehicle system issues, execute test plans, procedures, and protocols, and ensure quality and performance standards.
  • Work closely with engineering teams and stakeholders to implement best manufacturing practices, optimise design for manufacturing (DFM), and enhance lean processes.
  • Monitoring sophisticated equipment and process reliability; identifying and addressing problem areas.
  • Providing direct supervision, coaching and development for operations technical staff and support areas.
  • Identifying and implementing enhancements and modifications to complex manufacturing operations equipment and processes.
  • Communicate with suppliers to analyse their current or proposed product/process designs to determine feasibility of using existing designs or modifying the designs to improve process and/or product.
  • Provide guidance to manufacturing engineers and operators to develop high quality improvements and processes.

Ability to troubleshoot systems/equipment through understanding of process equipment and products to provide issue resolutions.

Judgment and Decision Making: Knowledge of the decision-making process; ability to carefully evaluate the impact of emerging business situations and choose the best path forward communicating actions and activities that maximize organisational performance. Experience working on cross-functional teams to make technical decisions. Experience coaching others to improve their judgement and confidence in decision making skills.

Change Control - MFG: Knowledge of the processes and procedures by which a change is identified, evaluated, approved, monitored and documented; ability to manage changes in the production environment and processes effectively. Explains the basic purpose of change control and consequences of lack of control.

What You Can Demonstrate:

Manufacturing Processes: Knowledge of existing product manufacturing methods, technologies and processes; ability to execute, plan, manage and monitor the entire manufacturing process.

Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organise, monitor, budget and control projects, ensuring efficient utilisation of technical and administrative resources to achieve project targets.

Manufacturing Safety: Knowledge of manufacturing safety; ability to identify work-related hazards and perform necessary activities to meet regulatory requirements for the safety and protection of workers, environment and site.

Manufacturing Process Design and Development: Knowledge of how to develop or design a manufacturing process; ability to establish and determine which processes and parameters should be opted to improve functionality and costs. Experience in LEAN manufacturing processes.

  • Specification of new equipment, Supplier Selection and Implementation and commissioning.

Experience Of Lean Manufacturing: Knowledge of the philosophy, fundamentals and implementation approaches of lean manufacturing; ability to integrate and implement lean manufacturing philosophy into existing production and management processes.

Judgment and Decision Making: Knowledge of process; ability to carefully evaluate the impact of emerging business situations and choose the best path forward communicating actions and activities that maximize organizational performance.

Problem Management Process - MFG: Knowledge of manufacturing problem management processes, methodologies and techniques; ability to use a disciplined approach to bringing that problem to a successful resolution

What You May Have

  • Experience in data acquisition systems and data analysis.
  • Experience implementing automated/robotic solutions in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of Siemens Teamcenter
  • Experience of leading quality concern resolution with tools such as 8D, 5why, fishbone diagrams, and other appropriate quality tools.
  • Degree or equivalent experience required.
  • AutoCAD/Fusion360
