PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £27,300 - £35,000 per annum pro rata depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As this is primarily a newsreading position you’ll need to be an experienced newsreader with a fantastic voice, an unflappable personality and an ability to deal with the pressure of hourly live bulletins.
You should be able to spot a great top line in a story, edit compelling audio clips and understand how to develop a story throughout the day and even into the next day.
You’ll need to have excellent news judgment and ability to work alone as well as alongside colleagues across Yorkshire to make sure stories travel.
In our digital first newsroom you will also be expected to write up stories for our online index so some digital experience, as well as understanding of online audiences, is preferred for this role.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact
- Producing and presenting hourly news bulletins for BBC Radio York
- Writing news article for the BBC North Yorkshire news index
- Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing fair, accurate, balanced, and impartial journalism.
- Working with colleagues to ensure all our journalism works across digital, TV, and audio platforms including radio programmes and BBC Sounds
- Tailoring different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve
- The ability to use a range of audio, video, and digital equipment as well as information technology to research, write, assemble, edit, and deliver programmes and bulletins in the most appropriate medium and to the highest professional standards.
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
- Carry out duties at all times in accordance with the BBC’s Health and Safety policy and Editorial Guidelines.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Have significant experience as a journalist, with radio newsreading experience
- Have effective planning and organisational skills, including the ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities
- Ability to work alone – sometimes you might be the only person on shift
- Be a self-starter who knows a good local story and how to find it
- Demonstrate sound editorial and policy decisions based upon a clear understanding of the BBC’s distinctive news agenda, the requirements of news and current affairs coverage and the audience
- Demonstrate a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understand how individual differences can benefit the BBC
- Have a strong understanding of media law
- You will have demonstrable experience of embracing technology, adopting new skills and adapting to the changing demands of a digital working environment
- Reliability, and a track record of working well on your own and under pressure.
- Teamwork – particularly working cooperatively in a large, and sometimes complex organisation.
