Vacancy Details
In the Estimator position you will play a key role in securing new work & supporting successful delivery of structural steel projects. This is a pivotal position in the business, responsible for producing accurate, competitive cost estimates and supporting the preparation of tenders for a wide range of projects.
The Estimator will interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and 3D models to prepare detailed take-offs for structural steel packages. You will assess material requirements, labour, fabrication and installation methods, as well as request, evaluate, and compare subcontractor quotations for bought-out items. Working closely with Senior Estimators and the wider team, you will contribute to tender submissions and ensure estimates are robust, commercially sound, and aligned with practical construction methods.
The role involves close collaboration with design, production, and project management teams to ensure estimates reflect current market conditions, fabrication processes, labour rates and industry standards. You will also support the handover process following tender award, helping to ensure continuity from bid stage to project delivery.
You will regularly liaise with clients, contractors, engineers, and suppliers to clarify scope, resolve queries, and support pre- and post-tender meetings. This role offers the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of the business, how projects are delivered and the importance of estimating to overall commercial success.
Key Skills & Experience
You will have a keen interest in the construction industry, with an awareness of structural steelwork, fabrication and structural form. Strong numerical, analytical, and organisational skills are essential, along with the ability to interpret engineering information such as general arrangement drawings, detail drawings, and 3D models.
You should be comfortable working to tight deadlines, managing large volumes of information, and making decisions where information may be incomplete. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Office applications is required, along with a positive, collaborative approach and a willingness to learn & develop.
A background in engineering, construction, or a related technical discipline is preferred, although relevant industry experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications.
