Roles and Responsibilities:
Operational
- Day to day supervision of shift team including prioritisation and allocation of workload; deploying labour based on consideration of the demands and requirements of the task against the competency and capability of resource.
- Working closely with inbound, outbound, and other support teams on a daily basis to ensure direction of labour, and planned engineering activities fully support operation.
- Assessment of engineering team skills and assisting in upskilling and training of staff, including integration of first line maintenance of plant and equipment. Develop and execute a robust succession plan for the team
- Review and optimisation of shift cover to control labour costs
- Support for administration and control of inventory and spares.
- Compliance with department processes; including shift handovers, briefs, and defect reporting/resolving
- Reporting and monitoring of data capture for automation and maintenance activities
- Maintain and improve performance to maximise efficiency of operation in line with KPIs
- Prepare and ensure consistent and effective communications are produced in a timely manner to meet the needs of the business, to include production updates, shift reports, breakdown reports and accident/near miss reports.
- Lead from the front, driving pace accuracy and standards. As part of this be competent and experienced as an Engineer in own right, either mechanically or electrically, although must be familiar and competent with both streams of engineering to enable decision making.
- Ensure all health and safety issues are dealt with and administrated in a timely and efficient manner.
- Reporting on and managing Hazards where identified, completing Accident and Near Miss reports as required, acting as a conduit for these issues identified by their team.
- Ensure work is being completed in a safe manner and completed to a safe standard. Ensure the right equipment is used, is safe and used in a safe manner.
- Ensure planned engineering maintenance activities as required within the CFC are completed within agreed timescales.
- Attend regular team leader meetings some of which will be on scheduled days off.
- Support and propose innovation ideas through the team to enhance the warehouse or engineering functions and improve the general running of the business.
- Deliver a high availability level within the operation to maximise our customer experience.
- Ensure site standards are high. An excellence approach to all activities and site standards is energised within yourself and your team.
- Resolve issues on facilities as required by the business.
- Management of ‘new’ issues and situations within the CFC when they occur, take ownership for the situation, establishing how to process based on assessment of the task and risk, applying experience and knowledge of the full team, developing a safe system of work as required.
Communications
- Conduct daily briefings and ensure effective communications within the engineering department and between the Operational and support teams,
- Responsible for communication of issues/information to senior management.
People
- Be proactive in the development of team members, Advise, lead and motivate team members, assess capability and identify and resolve training and skill requirements.
- Involvement in disciplinary issues in conjunction with the HR Team.
- Involvement in recruit and training of subordinate staff.
- Maintain and promote good employee relations on site, ensuring potential problems are dealt with at an early stage.
- Build and maintain a strong working relationship with Key Operational customers, and all other support function managers including HR, Projects and services
- Ensure effective deployment of labour resource based on capability, competency and experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Good technical ability relating to automation hardware and software, this may include, but is not limited to:
- HNC Engineering or equivalent
- Relevant Degree coupled with relevant applied learning
- Engineering Technician Apprenticeship
- Manufacturers PLC training
- Electrical and/or mechanical skills preferably gained in an FMCG background to at least NVQ 3
- Experience at a management or supervisory level within an automated environment
- Good organisational ability and the ability to plan and prioritise.
- Sound analytical skills with an eye for detail; good problem solving ability and a practical approach.
- Excellent communicator with the ability to analyse and impart knowledge .
- Comprehensive understanding of production, picking and storage MHe systems, gained from experience in an automated environment.
- Experience of a FMCG environment.
- Experience of working with Computerised maintenance management systems
- Flexibility of working pattern as and when required by business need.
- Numerate and PC literate including Word, Excel etc.
- Knowledge of Control Systems is desirable.
- Self motivated, consistent and able to work at pace.
- Experience within an Engineering Service Support role in an automated production environment.
