We are looking for a qualified Electrician to join the Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) in the Estates department. Working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same, you will be helping to deliver an excellent maintenance service direct to our customers.

In This Role, You Will

  • Undertake reactive, planned, and preventative maintenance works on electrical services and equipment.
  • Carry out regular planned preventative maintenance testing on fire alarm, emergency lighting installations and any other low voltage wiring systems, ensuring compliance targets are met.
  • Undertake systems fault finding and provide remedial reports.
  • Trace faults on controls systems and associated equipment.
  • Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and safe systems of work.
  • Act as a competent person for electrical isolations and de isolations.
  • Assist with managing critical and essential material stock levels.
  • Develop good working relationships with key customers to continually improve our service.

We’d Like To Hear From You If You

  • Hold a recognised apprenticeship in electrical services, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent qualification. 18th Edition IET Wiring regulations.

  • Are experienced in working within a reactive maintenance environment.

Job Description

Job Purpose

Electricians play an essential role within an enthusiastic and innovative direct labour organisation (DLO), delivering reactive maintenance activities, planned preventative maintenance, fault finding, and out-of-hours support for all electrical operations and systems across the Estate.

Duties and Responsibilities

Main duties

  • Undertake adaption/repair and reactive, planned, and preventative maintenance work, including systems checks and when necessary, problem diagnostics, on electrical services and equipment across the University’s estate in compliance with current IET Wiring and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
  • To carry out testing on fire alarm, emergency lighting installations and any other low voltage wiring systems.
  • To undertake first response fault finding and provide clear updates on remedial works for installations including but not limited to:-

General Duties

  • fire alarm equipment,
  • emergency lighting,
  • building management system (BeMS) wiring,
  • boiler controls,
  • motors and motor controls,
  • variable speed devices,
  • ventilation system wiring,
  • generators supply
  • any other low or extra low voltage equipment.
  • To be able to trace faults on control panels and associated equipment, working with Building Services Engineers to rectify faults.
  • Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation, policies and procedures. Undertaking task specific (dynamic) risk assessments and method statements, before carrying out maintenance and adaptation work, reporting any potentially unsafe working conditions.
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork required both manually or electronically is completed accurately and in a timely manner in line with set timescales (Service Level Agreements).
  • To attend, as identified and by agreement, development, and training courses to keep abreast of new industry best practice and statutory regulations.
  • On behalf of the University to act as a competent person for all works defined in and associated with Safe Systems of Work, including but not withstanding fire alarm and electrical isolation and de isolations.
  • Establish working relationships with key customers to help improve service levels, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Departments and outside bodies as required.
  • Assist with managing critical and essential material stock levels. Maintaining tools, equipment, and vehicles, taking responsibility for the safe keeping of these.
  • Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  • Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity.
  • To carry out such duties as are required and are commensurate with the level of this post.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Full Framework Apprenticeship in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. or Electrical Installations., NVQ Level 3-Electrical and Electronic Engineering., City and Guilds level 3 Certificate in the requirements for electrical installations BS7671 – 18TH Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations.JIB Apprenticeship (AM2).
  • Demonstratable experience of working within a reactive maintenance environment with substantial, relevant post apprentice experience.
  • Good understanding of job specific General Health and Safety in the workplace including risk assessments and method statement
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently to achieve overall team goals and the ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions using initiative to investigate and diagnose problems and to escalate as required at the appropriate level.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate appropriately with customers and other departments.
  • A valid driving license is necessary as it is a condition of employment that all personnel are able to utilise the fleet of university vehicles to reach all University sites.

Desirable Criteria

  • Good working knowledge and experience in various types of fire alarm & detection systems
  • Experience in Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) systems and controls
  • Initial and Periodic Electrical Inspection and Testing City and Guilds (2391) or EAL.
  • Fluency in Welsh written and oral

Additional Information

This is a full-time, open-ended position of 35 hours per week. Hours of work normally be 0800 to 1600, with one hour for lunch.

  • You will be part of an out of hours ‘on-call’ rota for which a stand-by payment is made as well as payment made for attendance when providing these duties at varying rates of pay depending on the time of response.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment and will be worked as and when reasonably requested. No regular level of overtime work is guaranteed.
  • To be available to attend annual Health Surveillance assessments.
