Electrical Field Service Engineer | United Utilities | Blackburn | £40,232

Are you an electrically skilled engineer who enjoys fault finding, working with control systems, and keeping essential assets powered and performing at their best?

This is a permanent opportunity to join United Utilities’ Bioresources Lancashire team as an Electrical Field Service Engineer, based in Blackburn. In this role, you will focus on the maintenance, repair, and optimisation of electrical and instrumentation systems across critical wastewater and resource recovery sites, including those generating renewable energy through anaerobic digestion.

Working in a field based environment, you will take ownership of electrical asset performance across a defined area. From motors and control panels to instrumentation and telemetry, you will play a key role in ensuring powered systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. This is a fast paced and varied role where you will manage your own workload, respond to faults, and contribute to improving operational performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver planned and reactive maintenance across electrical and instrumentation assets including motors, control panels, sensors, and control systems, ensuring safe and efficient operation
  • Diagnose electrical and control faults, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions to minimise downtime and maintain site performance
  • Install, replace, and commission electrical equipment and instrumentation in line with technical standards and operational requirements
  • Carry out preventative and predictive maintenance to improve reliability and support consistent asset performance
  • Ensure full compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, applying safe systems of work and electrical standards at all times
  • Maintain accurate asset records, maintenance data, and service documentation using corporate systems
  • Support the efficiency and output of sites, including anaerobic digestion and energy generating assets, by identifying and resolving system and control issues
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers, process controllers, and contractors to ensure coordinated and effective maintenance and project delivery
  • Support site projects and interventions, ensuring work is well planned, risk assessed, and aligned with operational needs
  • Manage your workload and travel across sites, responding effectively to both planned maintenance and reactive breakdowns
  • Participate in an out of hours standby rota to support operational resilience and incident response

Skills and Experience

  • Electrical apprenticeship or equivalent, supported by qualifications to a minimum of NVQ Level 3, with proven experience in electrical maintenance
  • Full UK driving licence is essential due to the field based nature of the role
  • Strong diagnostic and fault finding capability across electrical systems, control panels, and instrumentation
  • Understanding of wastewater or sludge treatment operations, ideally including powered or energy generating assets such as digestion plants
  • Experience working within regulated environments with knowledge of electrical safety standards, permits, and compliance requirements
  • Confident using digital systems to capture maintenance activity and analyse asset performance
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces and develop expertise across specialist electrical systems

Why This Role

This is an opportunity to specialise in electrical engineering within critical infrastructure that supports both environmental performance and renewable energy generation. As part of the Bioresources Lancashire team, you will work on complex powered assets that are central to delivering essential services across the region.

You will benefit from a role that offers autonomy, variety, and technical challenge, while being supported by a knowledgeable and collaborative team. With responsibility for your own patch and the chance to influence asset performance and efficiency, you will see the direct impact of your work every day.

Benefits:

  • 26 days annual leave rising to 30 with service, plus bank holidays
  • Competitive pension with up to 14% employer contribution and life cover
  • Performance related bonus of up to 7.5% plus recognition awards
  • Company funded healthcare plan and wellbeing support including mental health resources and Employee Assistance Programme
  • Access to discounts, gym savings, and flexible benefits through MORE Choices
  • Financial wellbeing support including Salary Finance and Wealth at Work
  • Electric vehicle scheme and ShareBuy options
  • Enhanced parental leave

If you are an electrical engineer who takes pride in fault finding, problem solving, and keeping systems running at their best, we would love to hear from you.
