The Opportunity

Avantor is looking for a technically savvy and proactive Cryogenic Technical Specialist to join our on-site team in Cambridge, UK. In this role, you’ll be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations and safe management of a high-risk, access-restricted Cryogenic Cell Bank facility housing cryopreserved biological materials.

This is a full-time, permanent position based on-site at our state-of-the-art facility, The Discovery Centre, located within the BioMedical Campus in Cambridge. Site location: The Discovery Centre, BioMedical Campus, Cambridge, UK

Working hours: 7:00–15:00 (core hours) to align with the team, however, service coverage is between 7:00–17:00, with occasional flexibility required depending on external engineering support or service-related meetings with the customer

The Team

You’ll join a collaborative team committed to scientific excellence and outstanding customer service. On-site, you’ll work alongside cross-functional teams including scientists, laboratory managers and suppliers to ensure timely, accurate resolution of customer inquiries and support of ongoing projects.

You’ll be part of our Laboratory and Production Services department, a critical function within Avantor that supports customers in the Life Sciences and pharmaceutical industries through expert product knowledge, application support, and problem resolution.

What We’re Looking For

  • Education:
    • A Degree in Science, Engineering, or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience:
    • 3–5 years of experience in cryogenic equipment calibration, liquid nitrogen storage, or field service engineering within the chemical or pharmaceutical industry
    • High level of technical expertise with cryogenic facility equipment, including liquid nitrogen tanks, cryo-tanks, alarm systems, and associated control software
    • Facility Management and Project Management experience in pharmaceutical settings (desirable)
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and IT systems, including software interfacing with cryogenic equipment
    • Experience in bio-banking or cell-banking environments is advantageous
    • Familiarity with health and safety documentation, compliance processes, and regulated or high-risk settings
How You'll Thrive And Create An Impact

  • Act as the main on-site contact for the Cryogenic Cell Bank facility, ensuring safe and efficient daily operations in a high-risk environment
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance, cryogenic system management, and engineering support, including liquid nitrogen deliveries and alarm response
  • Support compliance by performing SHE inspections, facilitating inductions, maintaining safety documentation, and assisting with audits
  • Manage inventory, consumables, and reporting tasks while supporting internal/external visits, training, and facility-related communications
  • Drive continuous improvement by collaborating on service enhancements, project delivery, and process optimisation in line with customer and Avantor goals
