Job Overview

This an exciting opportunity to join a team of Acute Physicians at Glangwili General Hospital.

The post holder will be expected to help develop and deliver all aspects of the Acute Medicine service through the Emergency Department, CDU and SDEC.

There are currently 4.3 WTE Acute Medicine Consultants in the Hospital and the incumbent will be required to support the expansion of this service in hospital and in the community working closely with the other colleagues.

Main duties of the job

To provide acute assessment and treatment of medical patients presenting to GGH front door (Emergency Department, Clinical Decision Unit and Same Day Emergency Care).

Providing effective leadership to multidisciplinary staff members in the CDU, SDEC and ED.

Ensuring close working with GP and medical colleagues.

Providing timely assessment and treatment of patients presenting to GGH with medical conditions.

Ensure close working between A+E, SDEC and CDU.

Provide clinical supervision of the SDEC and Emergency Department medical patients.

Ensure close cooperation with other medical consultant colleagues to develop seamless pathways of care for patients.

Work with the team to the development of “hot clinics” as an alternative to admission.

Ensure close liaison with GP colleagues to direct patients to the most suitable service.

Ensure development, support and training for nurse consultant and nurse practitioner colleagues.

Provide the necessary training and support of junior doctors.

  • 48 general practices (four of which are managed practices), 47 dental practices (including three orthodontic), 99 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only p roviders and 11 health centres;
  • Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;
  • Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.
