Job Summary
The unit operates as a combined ICU/HDU with 12 beds. All 12 beds are in individual side-rooms and are equipped to enable ICU care in each. The unit is equipped to a high standard including modern multifunctional monitoring and state of the art ventilators. All patient rooms have natural light.
The unit undertakes many procedures specific to Critical Care such as mechanical ventilation, percutaneous tracheostomy, cardiac output monitoring, non-invasive ventilation and haemofiltration. An integrated critical care information system (CIS) has recently been installed on the unit allowing for a paperless environment.
The unit maintains an information database and is enrolled in the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Council (ICNARC) case mix programme.
There is a Matron-led Outreach Team. An ALERT course, which has been running for several years, has now been replaced by a local course called REACT. NEWS 2 and an eObs system has been introduced to identify sick patients.
Main duties of the job
In-hours duties
You will be part of the multi-disciplinary team providing care, support and rehabilitation of the critically ill patients admitted to the Critical Care Unit. This involves daily review of all patients followed by a consultant led ward round. You will be part of the medical emergency team (MET) responding to emergencies around the hospital. You will take referrals from the Emergency Department and around the hospital and review patients with the support of the nurse-led Outreach team. You will be responsible for the admission and management of patients admitted to the Critical Care Unit, with support from the consultant.
Out-of-hours duties
You will participate in the full shift rota whilst in Critical Care. You will receive additional payments for your out-of-hours and additional night on-call hours.
