Job Summary

As a Higher Healthcare Technical Officer, you’ll play a vital role in supporting safe, highquality diagnostic and therapeutic services within our RCI laboratories. Working as part of a dedicated team, you’ll carry out a range of routine and nonroutine laboratory tasks that help ensure accurate testing, efficient sample handling, and reliable results for patient care.

You’ll prepare samples and reagents, operate laboratory equipment, contribute to environmental monitoring, maintain accurate records, and support colleagues by sharing knowledge and demonstrating procedures. This is a handson, varied role where your attention to detail, initiative, and commitment to high standards will directly support safe patient outcomes. It’s also a great opportunity to develop your skills and contribute to continuous improvement across our service.

Main duties of the job

Required

In this role you will be working in the Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) Laboratory, you will be required to participate in a range of routine clinical, technical and scientific activities in preparing and testing blood samples from Hospital Patients, with the support of your supervisor and other team members. Your responsibilties will include:

  • Handling blood samples and a range of equipment and carrying out routine tasks on a regular basis
  • Providing support during the routine opening hours of the laboratory
  • Manually handling equipment / reagents on a daily basis, occasionally weighing up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training
  • Supporting and training less experienced staff in some instances

About You

Experience and Knowledge (Essential only)

  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience of using computers and basic IT programs.

Qualifications And Training (Essential Only)

  • NVQ Level 3 qualification e.g. ‘A’ Levels OR National Diploma in a relevant subject area OR extensive experience working in a logistics/supply chain environment OR equivalent extensive experience of routine NHSBT procedures and understanding of non routine procedures.
  • Demonstrate committment to own Continued Professional Development (CPD)
